How Real Life Becomes the Curriculum at Farm School

“But how are the children actually learning?”

It’s a question that comes up often when families first encounter Farm School.

If there are no desks, blocks of formal lessons, worksheets moving children through subjects, or predetermined academic schedule directing the day, where is the learning happening?

It’s a fair question because most of us have been taught to recognize education by looking for teaching. We expect an adult delivering information, a lesson with an objective, and a curriculum determining what comes next.

But teaching and learning are not the same thing.

Children were learning long before anyone began formally teaching them.

So perhaps the better question is: What allows a child to learn?

Spend enough time with a garden and that question begins to feel familiar.

A seed already possesses an extraordinary capacity for growth. Given suitable soil, moisture, temperature, light, nutrients, and time, germination begins. The plant doesn’t wait for the gardener to teach it how to grow.

That doesn’t make the gardener unnecessary. Soil needs tending. Water must be managed. Pests arrive. Sometimes intervention is necessary.

But the gardener does not manufacture the growth.

The gardener cultivates the conditions in which growth can happen.

We see something similar in the body. Cut your finger and a complex repair process begins without conscious direction. We can clean and protect the wound, and sometimes medicine, stitches, antibiotics, or surgery are necessary. But medicine didn’t create the body’s capacity to heal. It supports or intervenes in a process already underway.

The point isn’t that natural is always better or that intervention is unnecessary. It’s that living systems already possess remarkable capacities of their own.

The seed grows.

The body heals.

The child learns.

Our role matters enormously. But our role isn’t to manufacture those capacities. It is to understand them well enough to cultivate the conditions in which they can flourish.

When the Tool Becomes the System

Modern life has given us extraordinary tools. Agriculture can test soil and calculate nutrient applications. Medicine can diagnose disease, fight infection, repair damage, and save lives. Education can introduce knowledge and ideas, but more teaching does not necessarily mean more learning—and sometimes our efforts to teach can interfere with the learning already taking place.

The question isn’t whether tools and expertise are useful. They are. The question is what happens when the tool becomes more important than understanding the living system it was created to serve.

A fertilizer recommendation doesn’t eliminate the need to understand the soil. A medical protocol doesn’t eliminate the need to understand the patient. A curriculum doesn’t eliminate the need to understand the child.

The tool gives us information. Observation gives us context.

The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service describes soil as a living ecosystem rather than simply material that holds plants upright. Healthy soil regulates water, cycles nutrients, supports life, and performs countless interconnected functions. Good farming therefore requires more than asking what we can add to make a plant produce.

We have to understand the system.

Children deserve the same consideration.

Children Are Not Products

We have become very good at measuring children: reading levels, math scores, benchmarks, percentiles, objectives, and academic progress.

Those measurements can tell us something.

But so can crop yield.

No thoughtful farmer would argue that yield alone tells us whether a farm is healthy. A field can produce an impressive crop while losing topsoil.

Why would we expect childhood to be different?

A child can read above grade level and be afraid of making mistakes. A child can memorize information without understanding why it matters. And a child who doesn’t yet meet an academic benchmark may be developing observation, problem-solving, creativity, persistence, practical reasoning, relationships, or leadership.

Academic skills matter.

They simply aren’t the whole child.

Knowing generally how five-year-olds develop isn’t the same thing as knowing this five-year-old.

A farmer learns the land by noticing the puddle that remains after a storm, the curled leaf on a tomato plant, or the garden bed where nothing thrives.

We learn children the same way.

What do they return to without being asked? What frustrates them? What fascinates them? What will they attempt over and over? What are they almost able to do?

Observation can look passive.

A farmer standing quietly in a field may look as though they’re doing nothing.

They’re reading the land.

An observant educator is learning to read the child.

And then deciding when to step in.

Sometimes we demonstrate, answer a question, introduce a word, provide a tool, or teach directly. Other times we stay quiet long enough for the child to continue experimenting.

The question isn’t whether adults should guide children.

It is when, why, and how much.

Real Life Becomes the Curriculum

This is why Farm School isn’t traditional school moved outdoors.

The farm is a living environment filled with authentic questions, responsibilities, problems, relationships, and consequences.

A tomato cracks after a rainstorm. Why?

The compost pile is suddenly hot. What’s happening?

Yesterday the squash blossoms were covered with bees. Today there are hardly any. Where did they go?

We harvested more zucchini than we can eat. What should we do with it?

Soon we’re baking zucchini bread, preserving vegetables, weighing produce, reading recipes, calculating quantities, identifying insects, observing weather, and caring for animals.

No one has to manufacture a reason to learn.

The reason is standing in front of us.

And something interesting happens.

The subjects begin to disappear.

Consider baking bread. There is mathematics in measurement, quantities, ratios, and time. Chemistry in fermentation. Biology in yeast. Agriculture in grain. History and culture in breadmaking traditions. Literacy in reading a recipe. Practical judgment in recognizing that today’s dough doesn’t feel like yesterday’s.

Where does mathematics end and science begin?

Life doesn’t tell us.

We created subjects because they are useful ways to organize knowledge. Reality itself is interconnected.

A tomato isn’t biology for forty-five minutes and mathematics after lunch. It is simultaneously biology, chemistry, weather, soil science, nutrition, agriculture and—when a child is selling tomatoes at a market stand—communication, economics, and mathematics.

The subjects we so carefully separate in school were never separated in life.

Children can encounter the world first. As their understanding deepens, we can give names to the disciplines that help us understand it.

Instead of collecting disconnected facts, they begin building an understanding of how the world fits together.

What If Later Isn’t Always Behind?

Then there is the question that worries so many parents:

What if my child falls behind?

But behind whom?

And behind what?

We’ve created a remarkably narrow timetable for childhood. A child who reads at five is “ahead.” A child who reads at seven is “on track.” A child who isn’t reading at nine may be considered significantly behind.

Those labels tell us how a child compares with an educational timetable.

They don’t necessarily tell us what that child is capable of becoming.

Developmental psychologist Peter Gray has spent decades studying children in self-directed educational environments, including Sudbury Valley School and unschooling families. He has documented enormous variation in when children learn to read when they aren’t required to follow a predetermined schedule.

Some learn early. Others learn considerably later.

And late readers don’t necessarily remain late readers.

Gray has described children who learned to read well beyond the age considered typical in conventional schooling, including adolescents who became readers within months after arriving at Sudbury Valley. These accounts aren’t controlled experiments, but they challenge an important assumption:

Does taking longer to begin something mean it will take longer to become good at it?

I’ve seen this unfold myself. I’ve known children who learned to read at nine, ten, or eleven—years after a conventional timeline would have labeled them “behind.” Yet once reading clicked, they became fluent readers remarkably quickly, often reading complex books that made the age at which they first learned to read seem almost irrelevant.

Their later start hadn’t determined their eventual ability. They hadn’t stopped learning during those earlier years, either. They were building vocabulary, understanding stories and increasingly complex ideas, asking questions, developing interests, making connections, and growing in countless ways that a reading benchmark could not measure.

When reading came, it became one more tool for exploring a world they were already deeply engaged in.

Research on formal reading instruction raises similar questions. Sebastian Suggate and colleagues compared children in New Zealand who began formal reading instruction at five with children who began at seven. The earlier group initially held an advantage, but by around age eleven it had disappeared.

The lesson isn’t that seven is the correct age instead of five.

It’s that there may not be one correct age at all.

That doesn’t mean we ignore genuine struggles. A farmer doesn’t ignore a plant that isn’t thriving. They observe it, examine the conditions, look for signs of growth and trouble, and intervene when intervention is actually needed.

We owe children the same attention.

Sometimes what we call “behind” is simply a child developing on a timetable that isn’t ours.

The Living Thing Comes First

None of this means doing nothing.

A gardener prepares soil, irrigates, manages pests, protects young plants, and intervenes when necessary. Medicine can support the body or intervene when its own mechanisms aren’t enough.

And children need adults.

We surround them with language and conversation. We read, tell stories, cook, build, grow food, care for animals, introduce tools and ideas, answer questions, teach skills, provide boundaries, and help through frustration.

Then we pay attention.

Because the purpose isn’t to produce a predetermined kind of child.

It is to cultivate conditions in which this child can flourish.

Maybe this is ultimately what farming has taught us about education.

Tools matter. Knowledge matters. Expertise matters. But the tool exists to serve the living thing.

The living thing does not exist to serve the tool.

When we stop reading the soil because we have the fertilizer schedule, we’ve missed something.

When we stop seeing the person because we have the protocol, we’ve missed something.

And when we stop seeing the child because we have the curriculum, we’ve missed something too.

A farmer cannot command a seed to grow.

A physician cannot command a body to heal.

An educator cannot command understanding into existence.

But we can nourish, protect, observe, remove obstacles, introduce what is missing, intervene when necessary—and recognize when intervention isn’t necessary at all.

Know the principles. Know the land. Know the person. Know the child.

Then respond to what is actually in front of you.

Sometimes our most important work isn’t making something happen.

It’s creating the conditions in which what is already possible has room to unfold.

That is how real life becomes the curriculum.
